IT’S IN THE PROCESS
Each illustration is completely unique and personalized. Typically, on every piece, I work with my clients from start to finish, to create a one of a kind piece that’ll make you smile for years to come.
STAGE ONE: The sketch. The bare bones. I’ll take your concept, or I’ll create a concept for you based on your reference images & ideas, & send to you for your approval.
STAGE TWO: The quote. If you’re happy with your sketch, I’ll give you a quote based on the amount of work I think the piece will take. If you’re not happy with your sketch, we repeat stage one.
STAGE THREE: Linework. If you’re happy with your quote, I’ll begin lining the illustration, adding extra details & cleaning the sketch up. If you’re not happy with your quote, we repeat stage one again until we have a piece that is within your budget.
STAGE FOUR: Block colour. Under the linework, I begin to add big chunks of colour. It’s a bit messy, but this helps to give you an overall view of how your piece will look once completed.
STAGE FIVE: Color & detail. From here, your illustration is polished up, shadows, highlights & of course, color details.
STAGE SIX: I’ll send you a low res, watermarked version of your illustration, plus a paypal link. Once you’ve had a chance to make the payment, I’ll email the high resolution image to you. You may use your image to print on whatever you like, as many times as you like; on social media & in some cases, for commercial use too.

HOW DO YOUR PRICES WORK?
As each illustration is unique, I create a sketch based on your concept and reference images before giving an official quote. This is because from here, I can make an estimate of how much work is involved to complete your piece.
If you don’t love your sketch, we can either continue to work on it until you do, or you are under no obligation to continue your project with me. Please kindly note that once you sign off on a sketch and a quote, any major changes may affect the timeline and cost of your project.
Promotions work slightly differently, as these have a pre-determined theme, you won’t receive a sketch or a unique quote. Generally, I offer a per character (person or animal) price and discounts on multiple characters. These prices will be announced along with promo details whenever they become available.
DO YOU OFFER PHYSICAL PRODUCTS?
The wonderful thing about the age of the internet is that I can create illustrations from my home in South Africa with clients across the globe. I wish I could send you canvases or t-shirts or greetings cards with your illustration on them, but by sending the artwork directly to you, you’ll not only save money on your printed items but also the time it would take for shipping.
My illustrations are limitation free, which is not usual when hiring an illustrator. You can print them as many times as you like, on anything you like, and in some cases, you can use them for commercial use too.
Please let me know when we chat if you’d like your piece to be printed on fabric, or at a super large size so that I can create your piece in the correct way from the beginning.
WHAT CAN I USE MY ILLUSTRATION FOR?
The sky is the limit! You can print it onto anything you like. You can print it as many times you like. You can use it for social media. And in most cases, with prior consent, you can use it for commercial use too.
Please note though, if you didn’t buy it, it’s not yours. Please don’t use my art, or any other artist’s work unless you commissioned it and paid for it. The intellectual property of all pieces belongs to the artist until this happens.
IS THERE A WAITING LIST?
There is, but I love lots of different projects to keep me feeling sharp and creative. I often work on two or three projects at a time, especially since I like to get your feedback as I go. This means that generally, at any given time, one client will be on stage one, sketching, and another on stage two, line work. If I can, in between, I can start on yours! Pop me a message and we can discuss my availability 🙂
Please note that my Christmas promo is super popular! It works on a first come, first served basis, but I’ll let you know what position you are in the queue and give you an ETA as to when you’ll receive your illustration. Don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter to get the early bird specials and be amongst the first in the queue.
DO YOU EVER WORK FOR FREE?
Nope, sorry! Although my illustrations have a childlike, nostalgic quality to them, they are professionally created. I’ve been doing this my entire life, I’ve studied, I’ve put in the hours and I work constantly on improving my craft. I know it seems like an ideal job (and it really is) to draw fluffy cloud dogs with rosy cheeks, but my illustrations do take time, and so because of that, I regret that I can’t work for free.
I’m afraid that I also don’t work for exposure or only royalties once your project is successful.
I do try to keep my prices reasonable though! I would like as many people to be able to enjoy my work as possible, and I completely understand that we all have bills, kids, dogs, shoes to buy, so I do think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what you can get for your money.
CAN I GET A DISCOUNTED RATE FOR A GOOD CAUSE?
Yes, I love supporting a good cause. I wish I could illustrate for free, but alas, gotta work to live. However, if I’m able to, I’ll always try to give discounts on any projects that inject something back into the community. Let me know what I’m illustrating for, and I’ll see what I can do!
HOW LONG DOES AN ILLUSTRATION TAKE?
This depends on how much work is involved. Typically, a piece takes between 10-30 hours, sometimes longer, but I do have to squish my day job around this, and of course, I often have other clients in my list who’d like their pieces too.
I will always be upfront about the timeline and keep you up to date with the progress. And I always try to work as quickly as possible, without compromising the quality of the work I do.
Got a rush job? Please allow at least a week, and note that during season, it may not be possible to complete your illustration in time.
DO YOU WORK ON CHILDREN'S BOOKS?
I would love to illustrate children’s books, absolutely! If you’re interested in hiring me for a children’s book, please email me.

HOW DO YOUR CUSTOM ILLUSTRATIONS WORK?
My main custom illustration happens on the lead up to Christmas and usually, it involves a choice of backgrounds and props. As long as your illustration looks like it belongs to the custom illustration family (it has a Christmasy feel) it’s still pretty customizable!
You supply reference images of the characters you’d like included and receive big discounts. You can use your illustration on whatever you like, as many times as you like, but unlike my regular commissions, these illustrations aren’t for commercial use.
DO YOU EVER DO REALISTIC COLORS?
My color pallet is really important to me. Because my illustrations are essentially simple, my color theory is where I really shine. I work with predominantly pastel colors, staying away from any bright colors, harsh colors and particularly, blacks! I like to think that the appeal to my work is really the soft tactile nature of my colorwork.
On occasion, I do create photorealistic work upon request, but generally, you can expect me to use creative license to give you a piece with my signature color style, a piece you’ll never get anywhere else.
CAN YOU MAKE YOUR STYLE MORE UNISEX?
I believe that everyone should live their own happiness. In an age of gender fluidity and identity consciousness, I totally get that my seemingly feminine style may have you wondering if I’m playing into outdated stereotypes.
I like to think that my illustrations, which often seem so simple, are more than just skin deep. My work celebrates love, intimacy, connection and almost more often than not, it focuses on the modern family. It just doesn’t look like we were told it was supposed to and isn’t that wonderful?
My pieces may be soft, pastel, delicate in some ways, full of pink and flowers, but they’re also graphic and bold. Their messages are strong, emotive and real. I love creating pieces that embrace the unique relationships in my clients’ lives, the love we share for the creatures who make our hearts feel full, the joy of creating memories and characters with vibrant, rosy cheeks.
I'D LIKE A DIFFERENT STYLE FOR MY ILLUSTRATION
Absolutely, as long as it’s VASTLY different from the style I normally do. My style is my identifier, my brand, and I’ve worked years on developing it, and building an audience who love it. When those who know my work see another illustration I’ve created, with a bit of luck, they know instantly who created it.
That said, I love breaking from the norm! I do appreciate that sometimes my style may not be suitable for your project, so I’m happy to work in a different style. What I can’t do though, is half and half. I’m very careful not to weaken my brand identity by changing key elements of what makes my illustrations look like my illustrations.
WHAT TOOLS DO YOU USE TO ILLUSTRATE?
I use a Wacom Cintiq Pro, Sketchbook Pro, and Photoshop CC. Although I use technology to create my work, the process is actually quite traditional. Every line is hand drawn and I use my art school color theory to bring a professional quality to an otherwise nostalgic and simple process.
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?
They say a good writer writes what they know, and I think the same is true for illustrators. I have three big, black, fluffy bear dog Newfoundlands, who fill my heart and make me smile. My muses, Bentley, Floydie & Bells are a common element of my work. This connection that I have with them may feel unique, but I’ve learned that almost everyone who hires me has their own version of love with four legs, or two legs, or no legs, at home, who fills their hearts and make them smile. Isn’t that what life is about? Sharing moments with our loved ones?
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR DOGS!
I have three, ginormous, marshmallow puddings; Floydie, Bentley (affectionately known as Little Bee) and Bellsie Bob. They’ve pretty much taken over my Instagram (it’s very hard not to photograph them) and even my illustrations. Muses, sweet newfie muses.
WHAT OTHER WORK DO YOU DO?
Oh, it’s a serious list! I’m the Creative Director for Hey Gorgeous Skincare, where I design from packaging to social media, and everything in between. I’m a partner in Delicious Pixels, a full creative agency that offers branding, design and multi-media solutions. I work as a freelancer for various clients on a regular basis, creating brand identity and more. I take photos with my partner for Pursuit of Clouds, a travel and documentary blog. I also create natural and organic dog products, which will soon be available on this site!
IS YOUR HAIR REALLY PINK?
Oh yeah! My hair is super pink 🙂
Got an awesome idea you’d love me to work on? Why not send me a message & let me make magic for you? I also appreciate love notes, squishing dog requests, suggestions & good old fashioned gossip, so please do say hello. I’d love to hear from you!
